The components seen here are part of an HK Porter Co. 0-4-0T steam locomotive built in 1937 for Jones & Laughlin Steel Co and weigh 94,000 pounds, two to three times heavier than the usual locomotives of this type. The immense weight was necessary to obtain the tractive effort required by the steel mill for handling ingot mold trains at the J & L Pittsburgh Works. At the time of this image the boiler and frame were off site, and only the drivers, saddle tank and cab are on the Heritage Foundation property. | Credit line: Photographs in the Carol M.
