The memorial commemorates the heroism of the flight crew who crash-landed a crippled jet airliner, bound from Denver to Philadelphia, at the airport in the western Iowa city in 1989, and those who saved 185 of the 296 passengers and crew on the ground. A statue at the site depicts one of the news photos taken that day, of Iowa National Guard Lt. Col.
