The Cairo was one of seven ironclad gunboats employed by the Union Navy on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers during the American Civil War of the 1860s. It was sunk by a Confederate torpedo in the Mississippi River above Vicksburg in 1862. Raised from the muck of the river and moved to Pascagoula, Mississippi, for restoration in 1962, the ship's remains were moved to the Vicksburg military park in 1977. | Credit line: Photographs in the Ben May Charitable Trust Collection of Mississippi Photographs in the Carol M.
