These were the days when "colored" people were denied entrance to the main floor of many theaters throughout the American South. They were sent to their own, rickety entrances that led directly to their segregated balcony seats. The theater was designed by John Gaisford and one of the first theaters in the area to be built mainly for showing movies. During the 1930s, the Marion was acquired by the Saenger Amusements chain, which renamed the theater the Paramount Theatre. In 1986, the Paramount was taken over by a group that used the theatre for performing arts, and was renamed the Larry Thompson Center for the Performing Arts. The theater had been long closed by the date of this photograph in 2016. | Credit line: Photographs in the Ben May Charitable Trust Collection of Mississippi Photographs in the Carol M.
