The center is located on land that was once a wheat farm. The area's developers, Hugh Prather and Edgar Flippen, decided to create a town square for the community. For inspiration, they traveled to the 1929 World's Fair in Barcelona, Spain, and to Mexico and California. When the plaza opened in 1931, its only tenants were a gas station and block of shops. Completed in 1947, the shopping center is now one of the most exclusive in America. | Credit line: The Lyda Hill Texas Collection of Photographs in Carol M.
