One of several small, stone, often hard-to-find castles scattered in out-of-the-way places in South Hero, Vermont, the southern half of Grand Isle, one of the Lake Champlain Islands chain in Lake Champlain, separating Vermont and New York State. They were created by a Swiss immigrant, Harry Barber who performed odd jobs around South Hero, in the mid-1900s, and modeled after castles he remembered from his homeland. Barber tried unsuccessfully to persuade a local museum to display some of his work but was turned him down. Devastated, he committed suicide in 1966 at the age of 66 | Credit line: Photographs in Carol M. Highsmith's America Project in the Carol M.
