Old-style handcarts at the Martin's Cove Mormon Handcart historic site in Sweetwater County, Wyoming. The site, on the old Mormon and Oregon trails (and the California Trail and Pony Express route as well, which all followed similar routes before diverging in what is now western Wyoming), recalls the Mormons' westward migration after they were forced from their village in Illinois. Many Mormon emigrants pulled their families and/or possessions in crude handcarts on the arduous journey.
