The zinc statue, painted white to resemble the marble that abounds in the area, depicts a Greek mythological figure: the feisty princess Niobe. The Prussian master sculptor Moritz Geiss is believed to have the cast the one-quarter life size statue c. 1860. Displayed at the London Industrial Exposition in 1862, it is believed have been purchased by a New Hampshireman, Isaac Adams, a prosperous inventor of a widely used steam press, and brought to the United States. | Credit line: Photographs in Carol M.
