The rock was inscribed by a 19th century physician, Joseph C. Greene, who had grown up in the nearby Vermont town of South Starksboro. One of his early jobs had been to deliver logs to the Bristol sawmill via this road, which was then a dirt road filled with obstacles and stream crossings. When Greene reached this big slab of rock signifying safe and level travel, he'd always say a silent prayer of thanks.
