The Spanish Renaissance-style building, designed by Harry C. Holbrook, opened in 1928 as a movie theater and thrived for some time before what seemed like an inevitable decline with the rise of television and cable competition. Heading for demolition in the late 1990s, it was purchased by the Longaberger Co., a regional maker of baskets and other household goods. The company restored it fully, then donated it to the City of Newark. It is now (2016) a venue for concerts and stage productions. The Twain statue, by Gary Price, was placed in front of the building to honor actor Hal Holbook, a friend of the theater, who played Twain in a one-man stage play for many years. | Credit line: Photographs in the Carol M.
