The building was designed by Mills, famous as the designer of the Washington Monument in the nation's capital. But the owner was Ainsley Hall, a wealthy Columbia merchant who died during its construction in 1823. The home was for many years part of the campus of the Columbia Theological Seminary, which moved out of Columbia in 1960.
