The historic mansion was the home of members of the prominent Hampton family. Built in 1818 by wealthy Columbia merchante Samuel L. Jackson, it was later purchased by former War of 1812 general Wade Hampton I, a wealthy cotton planter. In turn, his son and grandson also resided in the home. During the American Civil War, the house was used as the occupying Union Army's headquarters.
