In 1868, during Reconstruction, the legislature moved the capital to Atlanta. The statehouse was used as the court house for Baldwin County, then by what became Georgia Military College. The building remains at the center of the college campus and is open for tours. NOTE TO RESEARCHERS: This gateway was also photographed on black-and-white film c. 1940 by American photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston.
