Built in 1826 as a two-story building and later expanded, it became home, in 1841, to a noted apothecary at street level, which for 52 years dispensed medicines and flavored syrups that it also exported around the world. Upstairs were a dentist's and other offices. This was known locally as the "lower" Hay Building. There was also an "upper" Hay building, also angular in shape.
