Beginning service in 1868, this was the world's first mountain-climbing rack-and-pinion, or "cog," railway. It uses a Marsh rack system and one or two steam locomotives and six biodiesel powered locomotives to carry tourists to the top of the mountain. Called Agiocochook by some American Indian tribes, Mount Washington, at 6,288 feet elevation, is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States and the most prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River. | Credit line: Photographs in Carol M.
