Distant autumn view of the Linn Cove Viaduct, a 1,243-foot bridge that snakes around the slopes of Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina, near Linville. This was the last section of the Blue Ridge Parkway to be finished. Considered America's longest linear park, the scenic parkway runs for 469 miles through 29 Virginia and North Carolina counties, linking Shenandoah National Park in the former state to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in far-western North Carolina. It runs mostly along the spine of the Blue Ridge, a major mountain chain that is part of the Appalachian Mountains | Credit line: Photographs in Carol M. Highsmith's America Project in the Carol M.
