The approximately 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail, or simply the A.T., is a marked hiking trail in the Eastern United States extending between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy claims that the Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only trail in the world. An estimated 2,500 people or more more successfully "thru-hike the entire trail Á ¹ some from one end to the other, then back again in what is known as a "yo-yo." | Credit line: Photographs in Carol M.
