A onetime slave, Dunbar was an American poet, novelist, and newspaper editor who often wrote in the Negro dialect associated with the antebellum South. He wrote the lyrics for the 1903 musical comedy "In Dahomey," the first all-African-American musical produced on Broadway. Dunbar died of tuberculosis at age 33 and high schools in Dayton, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere are named in his honor. | Credit line: Photographs in the Carol M.
