This is an example of David M. Warren's 1879 map of South America. It covers the entire continent from the Caribbean to Cape Horn and from the Pacific to the Atlantic. The Falkland and South Georgia island groups are included. It shows surprisingly accurate detail of the interior of Brazil and the Amazon Basin with areas marked as 'Gold Region' and 'Diamond District.' 'Lake Reyes' is identified as the source of the Amazon River. Bolivia is shown with an outlet to the Sea and Patagonia as separate from the Argentine Republic and Chile. An inset map in the lower right quadrant depicts the Isthmus of Panama entitled 'Route of the Railroad from Aspinwall to Panama. The city of Colon was named in honor of Christopher Columbus, but was United States emigrant community called it Aspinwall after the Panama Railroad promoter William Henry Aspinwall. Throughout, the map identifies various cities, towns, rivers, islands, mountain passes and an assortment of additional topographical details. The map is color coded according to regional and political boundaries with elevation rendered by hachure. Issued as page 65 in the 1879 edition of Warren's Common-School Geography.
