A scarce 1885 U.S Coast and Geodetic Survey nautical chart or maritime map of Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island, Maine. Presented on a polyconic projection, this map is centered on the town of Bar Harbor, but covers much of the surrounding area as well as Bar Island, Sheep Porcupine Island, and Round Porcupine Island. Inland topographical detail is presented by contour lines and individual buildings are identifiable by their footprints. This was a working nautical chart so there are some pencil annotations and notes associated with navigation. This map was first published in 1876. The present example is the 2nd printing, 1885. Published under the supervision of J. E. Hilgard and C. O. Boutelle. Represents plate no. 1857 and chart no. 318. We have found no market history for this map in the past 35 years.
