The map "Negroland, adjacent countries" was created by Emanuel Bowen in 1747. It shows the western coast of Africa, including the regions of "Negroland" and "Upper Guinea." The map also highlights the principal European settlements in the area, indicating which ones belong to England, Denmark, Holland, and other European powers. Bowen drew the sea coast and rivers from surveys and the best modern maps and charts available at the time, and he regulated them using astronomical observations.
The map includes various geographical notes, and an ornamental cartouche adorns the title. The cartouche depicts several figures, including a man holding a sword and a shield with a coat of arms. The map itself shows the interior of the African continent, including the Niger River and the kingdoms of Bornu, Tombuctoo, and the African Journals. Overall, the map provides valuable insight into the state of cartography in the mid-18th century and provides a glimpse into the cultural and political landscape of western Africa at the time.
