The Sacred Heart of Jesus statue at the Mother Cabrini Shrine in Golden, Colorado. Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini found the property, which had two barns and a springhouse but no reliable source of water, on the side of Lookout Mountain in 1902. In 1954 the 22-foot statue Jesus, carved by an Italian artist, was mounted on an 11-foot base high above the city. That year, 373 steps leading up to the top of the Mount of the Sacred Heart were placed and completed in 67 days. The stairway follows the path Mother Cabrini, her fellow Catholic sisters, and orphan children took to the top of the mountain.

Carol M. Highsmith (born 1946) is a photographer, author, and publisher who has photographed all 50 of the United States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico for 30 years. She specializes in documenting architecture, ranging from the monumental to the everyday and whimsical. Highsmith is donating her life ’s work of more than 100,000 images, copyright-free, to the Library of Congress, which established a rare one-person archive. Out of 14 million images, the Carol M.
