At the bottom of the map, in the center, a text block describes the work of Mason \u0026amp; Dixon in drawing the Pennsylvania \/ Maryland border along the 38th latitude. The whole is surrounded by an attractive strap-work border. Cartographically this map is based upon the earlier work of J. H. Colton. The particular in the first Johnson Map in which the government buildings appear at the top of the map. The previous variant, 1860, features only the capitol building in roughly the same location. The next variant, taking a hint from Colton, will drop out the views in the lower left quadrant entirely in exchange for an inset plan of Washington D.C.
